“Our mission at Sun valley Trekking is to provide pure mountain stoke to our guests,” Joe St. Onge.
Does it get any better than that? Sun Valley Trekking is unusual and? Rad! With a year-round operation and six backcountry huts – many of which are hike/ski accessible only – this operation is like few others.
Wood cutting on skis, big mountain objectives, and an epic team are requirements to run this complex operation. Listen in to hear Joe lay it out and discover why Sun Valley Trekking is widely recognized as one of North America’s most distinctive backcountry hut systems!
Sun Valley Trekking is an alternative development built to provide an exceptional backcountry experience to those who enjoy the climb, savor pristine snow and embrace wild landscapes.
Joe and Francie St. Onge manage one heck of a lease as public-private partners with the U.S. Forest Service. Working within the stringent guidelines of their environmental impact survey, the St. Onges’ maintain and control six different huts almost exclusively by old school guide-power. This is how the entire operation has been run for the 35 years.
An intern guide program keeps the huts stocked with food and firewood. Interns also learn on-site management and general maintenance of the property. Interns are tasked with learning the trade from the lead guides, and, in the meantime, get outrageously fit, and crush their own on-snow objectives.
If you’re wondering how it all gets done with a backcountry alternative development, look no further than Joe and Francie – they’re proverbial experts at getting it done in grand style!
